I like the grey areas in people's personalities, the duality of good and evil. Or evil just as an absence of good. It reflects the true nature of humankind - just varying degrees of darkness. The stark evil character is often too one dimensional (as the post mentions). If we start to delayer evil, one will always find a backstory, a sliver of light hidden somewhere. That's true with characters in stories and life.
I like your point about how making their actions more personal makes them easier to hate and harder for readers to sympathize with them. It brings to mind how Moash is so widely hated despite his actions not being nearly as evil as the ones of other antagonists, but the fandom is biased against him because his deeds hurt our main characters. I'm not part of the anti-moash Hate club, but I think it's interesting how some people would have mentioned him as an example of a pure evil villain
I always saw Moash as someone Kaladin could have been if he didn't have a magic therapy fairy. I've only just started Rhythm of War though, so I might still join the Moash haters depending on what he does in the book.
“This is the type of villain that you hate with the kind of visceral passion that Kendrick has for Drake.” Love this lol.
Curious to hear this take on Mahito. He’s one of my favorite JJK characters because I did find a dose of sympathy in him for his want to be human. He wanted it so badly that I found myself really drawn to his evil as an act of acting out against what he couldn’t become. Of all the Curses, he was the most compelling.
I always saw Jogo as being the one who was jealous of humanity. Mahito always seemed to enjoy being who he was, and killed humans because it was his nature as a curse. Nanami’s my favorite character, so I’ve always hated Mahito for obvious reasons.
Funny, Nanami and Mahito were my two favorites and then… yeah obvious reasons put me in a dilemma. Idk why I was drawn to Mahito, he’s overly cruel and definitely enjoys being so, but I still felt like he was doing it almost as if acting out when he doesn’t get what he wants.
