I think powerscaling is important for the same reason that knowing the rules of a magic system is important. We need to know what a character is capable of/what they can't do in order to follow the story and have a clear sense of the stakes
Exactly! But it shouldn’t be the ultimate deciding factor to win a fight. Creativity, teamwork, and internal factors should also play a part. One of my favorite examples of this is from ATLA – Zuko vs Azula. Azula was easily the more powerful firebender, but Zuko had come to terms with himself and was thinking clearly while she was falling apart. That’s why he was winning against her.
