Just so you know, it's 1:37 from where I live, and I was rereading this in bed and reflecting on where I've seen this play out in with media I've consumed. I love the way you've fleshed out your thoughts here tbh.

Thanks for this. Reflecting on it, I can see your the validity of what you're saying. On the opposite side, quite a bit of the Shojo anime has a similar prob where the male MCs are written either with just comic affect or just as the 'straight' man to the funny/quirky/tragic/ FFM. I get the whole 'self-insert-fantasy' but when you're not a teen/YA, it's tedious to watch. Happily, there are exceptions, like Horimiya and In the Clear Moonlit Dusk, as well as 'Fragrant'.

Thanks! Personally, I like the comedy aspects of Horimiya much more than the romantic ones. I haven't heard of In the Clear Moonlit Dusk, but I'll definitely check that out sometime.

Well, that does sound about right. I am also not holding my breath on well written female characters in shonen either, but one can always hope. Also, may I present another good shonen romance arc? Erza and Jalal. While both side characters, they are both developed to the point where it doesn't feel like either of them exist only as a love interest.

Glad you enjoyed my post! I dropped Fairy Tail around the 150-chapter mark, but I'll take your word for it about Erza and Jellal.

I think you hit the nail right on the head here. 100% agree with everything you've said. Thanks for articulating the issue so well 🙌

Glad to see the highlight on Fullmetal Alchemist. If you haven't already tried, you should try Silver Spoon by the same mangaka.

My TBR is a little backed up right now but I'll definitely check it out sometime!
